PICKING up cycling is
easier than finding a safe spot to cycle with
Kelana Jaya parliamentary
liaison officer Ong Chong Swen said more
residents in her area had shown interest in the
sport as it was suitable for all ages.
“Cycling is slowly
becoming an accepted hobby in places like Subang
Jaya and this is a positive sign.
“If people cycle to Taipan
from their houses instead of driving there, it
will definitely be able to ease the present
traffic congestion in the area,” said Ong,
adding that local councils should provide
cycling track and light up the the areas as well
for night use.
For a start her office is
supporting this weekend’s USJ14 1Malaysia
Cycling Expedition which is organised by Kelab
Rekreasi USJ 14 and SK Datuk Onn Jaafar USJ15.
The event, first of its
kind by the club in Subang Jaya, would see
participants being flagged off from the Sekolah
Wawasan USJ15 Complex where cyclists will pass
through Putra Heights and Bukit Lanchong before
returning to the school grounds.
“We want to
encourage more youngsters to take up outdoor
activities like cycling and perhaps be a
stepping stone to nurture new talents.
“One may end up
being a national cyclist one day,” she said.
The event to be held on
March 18 will begin with registration at 6.30am
followed by the flagging-off an hour later.
Kelab Rekreasi USJ14
chairman Abdul Halim Abdul Aziz said the club
intends to attract more youngsters too.
“Instead of hanging
out at malls why not come over and join us for a
day of fun,” he said adding that bicycle
products and clinics will also take place at the
complex on the same day.
He urged particpants to be
at the complex early to register as there will
be a lucky draw later in the day.
The club, he said, was
anticipating some 1,000 cyclists to show up on
Sunday. Entrance is free. The event is open to
individuals from above seven-years of age.
